An Afternoon with a Filmmaker // Portrait Session

Last week I spent the afternoon at the new digs/studio with my pal JC Alcantar. Alcantar, a young filmmaker from Chula Vista asked me to shoot some portraits of him for a new project he is pitching to the film industry. Aside of shots for his new project, this shoot was a benchmark shoot as JC is on a health movement and has recently lost 75 lbs. I am super proud of this guy! Creatively he is hungry and health wise he is on consistent movement to optimal health!

Professionally, I shoot with Sony gear, from my camera body to all of my lenses. For this portrait session I decided to integrate a bit of camerawork from my Fujifilm system (XT-3 & Fujinon Lenses) and I was head over heels with the outcome. The skin profiles the Fujifilm system embodies are incredible. The images used from the Fujifilm system were virtually out of the camera.

From the studio, we ventured out on the field and set up a few outdoor shots in downtown Oceanside. Being a filmmaker, we decided that an artsy black and white shot in front of the Star Theatre was ideal. The end result was really cool and reminiscent of a Beastie Boys a la Rickey Powell image. For that shot I used the XT-3 along with a cool little fisheye I recently picked up. JC seemed pretty stoked about the image and that’s all that mattered.

Please check out JC’s Instagram account (@juanalcantar1985) to follow him on his journey. There you will find a play-by-play on his upcoming project, The Filmmaker.

Thank you for visiting today and peace out!!!!
